3.1 Why public performance permission is required
Showing a film outside a domestic private home is legally a public performance under the New Zealand Copyright Act 1994. Personal home video discs, downloads, and private consumer streaming accounts do not grant public performance rights.
Permission must be secured from the authorized studio distributor for every screening, regardless of whether admission is free or ticketed.
3.2 Separate legal and operational approvals
Film rights are separate from venue permits, APRA/OneMusic music licenses, film classification ratings, and Radio Spectrum Management FM audio transmission licenses.
3.3 Events organised and promoted by Firefly
For all public screenings hosted by Firefly Cinemas, our team directly secures the official film copyright license prior to public announcement.
3.4 Client events where Firefly arranges rights
For private, corporate, or school fundraisers, Firefly can manage studio licensing on your behalf when included in your hire package.
3.5 Client-obtained rights
Where a client chooses to supply their own license, proof of studio approval must be provided prior to setup.
3.6 Equipment-only or dry hire
Dry AV equipment rentals do not include content licensing unless explicitly stated in your rental agreement.
3.7 Licence scope and limitations
Licences are strictly issued for a single specific date, venue, and approved title.
3.8 Film source and playback copy
Firefly uses professional distributor-approved playback media and commercial DCP/digital sources.
3.9 Classification and audience controls
All films screened adhere strictly to the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) New Zealand ratings (G, PG, M, R13, R16).
3.10 Trailers, posters and promotional artwork
Marketing artwork and studio posters are used under licensed studio promotional guidelines.
3.11 Music before, during and after the event
Pre-show background playlists and radio broadcasts comply with OneMusic New Zealand public performance music licensing.
3.12 Client-supplied advertisements and presentations
Clients providing custom presentations or sponsor slides must own or clear all contained media rights.
3.13 No recording, copying, livestreaming or rebroadcasting
Audience members are strictly prohibited from filming, recording, or livestreaming the on-screen feature film (Anti-Piracy enforcement).
3.14 Title unavailability or licence refusal
If a studio unexpectedly places a title into a blackout window, Firefly will coordinate a comparable studio replacement or date transfer.
3.15 Licence fees, evidence and confidentiality
Studio license fees and box office percentage reports are handled directly by Firefly Cinemas compliance officers.
3.16 Remedies for infringing material
Firefly reserves the right to immediately pause playback of any unverified or infringing content.
