If you’ve never experienced an open-air drive-in cinema, you probably have a few practical questions: How does the sound work? Will my car battery go flat? How do they stop tall SUVs from blocking small cars? Here is your complete, beginner-friendly guide to how Firefly Cinemas operates.
1. Crystal-Clear FM Radio Audio (No Bluetooth Lag)
In the golden age of drive-ins, cinemas hung heavy metal speakers on vehicle window frames. Today, Firefly uses broadcast-grade digital FM transmitters. When you arrive, our entry gate stewards tell you the night’s FM frequency (typically 88.3 FM).
Simply turn your vehicle’s car stereo or portable radio to 88.3 FM. You get immediate, zero-latency stereo surround sound delivered right through your vehicle’s audio system. You control the volume, the bass, and the balance to suit your preferences.
2. Will My Car Battery Run Flat?
Modern car stereos use very little power, but keeping your ignition on ‘Accessory’ mode for a 2-hour movie can drain older batteries. Here are our top recommendations:
- Turn off climate fans, seat warmers, and headlights.
- Start your car’s engine during the 15-minute intermission to give the battery a quick boost.
- Alternatively, bring a portable battery-powered FM radio so you don’t use your car battery at all.
- Firefly Peace of Mind: Our ground crew carries heavy-duty jump-start power packs at every screening just in case!
3. How Vehicles Are Parked
To ensure every ticket holder enjoys an unobstructed view of our giant 12-metre screen, vehicles are systematically marshalled based on height:
- Front Rows: Sedans, hatchbacks, and compact coupés.
- Middle Rows: Mid-sized crossovers, wagons, and smaller SUVs.
- Rear Rows: Full-sized 4WDs, lifted utes, and campervans.
- Tailgaters: Vehicles wanting to reverse in with boots open are parked in designated bays so their open tailgates don’t block vehicles behind them.
4. Headlight & Interior Light Rules
Once you are parked and the movie begins, all exterior headlights, fog lights, and running lights must remain off. If your vehicle has automatic daytime running lights that stay on while the engine is running, a quick fix is engaging the emergency handbrake or covering lights with a towel or cardboard.
